User Testing Lab

Inside The Lab  "..capturing the test process on camera, each mistake, success, or moment of confusion.."

Our fully featured usability lab provides our customers with both quantitative and qualitative feedback on user experience with product or service interfaces. The test takes place in the conventional manner – using the lab does not remove any flexibility in terms of test design. However, the lab enables us to track results and data with total accuracy and present in a compelling format. Our lab equipment includes:

Digital Video Camera and Microphone. By capturing the test process on camera, each mistake, success, or moment of confusion can be viewed repeatedly in order to ascertain exactly what is causing difficulty. As specific instances of user behaviour can be ‘tagged’, creating a montage of common errors for presentation purposes is a simple job.

Scan Converter and Video Mixer. These enable the side-by-side display of user behaviour and screen activity – presented as a ‘flicker free’ scan from the PC itself. With this functionality the tester can observe what the user is doing on screen as they comment, express confusion or experience difficulty. In conjunction with the video output, an entire test can be viewed in this way.

Test Management and ‘Click-Tracking’ Software. The lab records every mouse click. This information provides a record of a user’s exact path through a site and how long they remained on any one page. After multiple tests, this information can be used to identify common routes through the site.

In addition, test management software enables the tester to identify key user behaviours. These might include ‘reading content’, ‘being lost or confused’, ‘making a purchase’, or whatever is suitable and relevant. During the test each instance of these behaviours can be tagged. This provides a permanent record of where and when these behaviours occurred, helping pinpoint trouble spots. Video footage of these difficulties can then be assembled for presentation.
